Model kits were always allowed in my courses.
50 minutes seems like a serious constraint on the type of questions that would get asked. It would be enough to cover either a decent number of multiple choice questions or a small number of short-medium answer questions. Being asked to do complicated stereochemistry questions w/o a model kit sounds like it would be tough.

I’m not sure why the intense time crunch is necessary for one to demonstrate mastery. i had same complaint about the GREs. More like a video game than a demonstration of understanding.
