There have been rumours floating around recently that Sonic might be getting some kind of retro collection on Xbox, and it looks as though that's the case, as Sonic Origins has been announced with a release window of 2022.
This collection will bring together Sonic 1 and 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Sonic CD "on the latest platforms" (we're assuming that means Xbox!), along with added content and features, although further details have yet to be revealed.
SEGA says more information on Sonic Origins will be coming later in the year, so we'll keep our eyes peeled.

I've got Sonic 1, 2, and 3 on the Series X already via backwards compatibility. So this isn't really for me, but happy for anyone excited for it!
The fact that the trailer has an "original gameplay" disclaimer and that the collection releases in 2022 "with added content and features" makes me think that they're not re-releasing the Mega Drive/Genesis ROMs. I'm quite excited about this. The games are likely remakes, probably by Christian Whitehead "The Taxman" or M2.
I will pass, I can play them on my Mega SG from Analogue.
"with added content and features"
I think for a lot of people a purchase depends on this, so we'll have to wait and see what this turns out to be.
I got Sonic Mania from the library a while back and the nostalgia quickly left the room when it looked like a Genesis game from the 90s. I ha a blast playing sonic back in the day but not sure I'll be playing these again. Add it to gamepass and I'll give it a go with the kids.
@Tasuki I really want one of those, there's meant to be new stock next month so fingers crossed I can get one
As @carlos82 pointed out on NL, Sonic 3 will also be widescreen according to the person running the official Sonic account.

@carlos82 They are nice. I.wish I can grab me a Super NT but the last time they went up for sale the scalpers beat me to them
@BlueOcean I think that’s a safe bet. The games listed minus 3 are all games that he’s previously remastered for IOS and Android.
It's telling that out of all the Sonic announcements today, this is the one that I'm anticipating the most.
@mousieone Yes, it might be a small collection but a fine one 😊.
Add Sonic Spinball and the sphere game that you could play by putting Sonic on Sonic and Knuckles and this would be a day one buy for me.
It’s hard to feel excited for this collection when all of the games are already available on Xbox via BC.
Why would Sega put so few games on this collection, isn’t it supposes to be a 30th anniversary celebration? Why not at least include the Master System titles?
@JoakimZ Sonic's collections usually have an emulator and ROMs, this seems to be the 16-bit Sonic games (excluding spin-offs) running on Retro Engine or something similar. It's also the first time that Sonic 3 & Knuckles is not emulated since the original release. The versions that are available on Xbox via BC are also emulated and 4:3 except Sonic CD which was remade in 2011.
In short, this will be the first time that a remastered version of 1 and 2 is available outside mobile phones and the first time ever that Sonic 3 & Knuckles is remastered.
Side note, emulated Master System and Game Gear would be a nice bonus.

@BlueOcean not strictly true about Sonic 3 and Knuckles been the first time it wasn't emulated, Sonic Jam on the Saturn were all native ports of those Megadrive games.
Like you I am hoping for those Master System/Game Gear games in some form too
@carlos82 Okay but I assume that the Saturn version didn't improve anything.
@BlueOcean not really, apart from a couple of bugs
